Former Berrima Correction Centre

Berrima bannerAbout the project

Property & Development NSW (PDNSW) has listed the former Berrima Correctional Centre, Argyle Street Berrima for sale via an Expressions of Interest (EOI) campaign. PDNSW are seeking responses for the adaptive re use of the State heritage listed site to deliver social, economic and cultural outcomes and benefits for the community including alignment to State and Local planning strategies.

The EOI will close 26 November 2021 at 3pm and short-listed respondents may be required to respond to a request for tender. For further details, refer to www.tenders.nsw.gov.au (21PD012).

Additionally, PDNSW has lodged a Development Application to Wingecarribee Shire Council to subdivide of a portion of the Site along the Wingecarribee River which will be retained in Government ownership to allow continued public access along the existing walkway.

Background

Corrective Services NSW engaged PDNSW to investigate options and potential opportunities for the conversion and adaptive re use for the Berrima Correctional Centre which had been targeted for closure in 2020.

The Berrima Correctional Centre opened in 1839, and held maximum and minimum-security male and female prisoners, including being used as a prisoner camp during World War 1.

Located close to cafes, parks, rivers and Australia’s oldest continually licensed Inn, the property has two historic cottages, a tennis court, industrial shed and commercial kitchen, in addition to the gaol’s 60 cells, watch tower, guard offices and commercial space.

Next steps

The EOI will close 26 November 2021 at 3pm and short-listed respondents may be required to respond to a request for tender. Registration of a subdivision plan is anticipated for early 2022 to enable the divestment of the Site and to retain Government ownership of the land along the Wingecarribee River.
