About the project
Property and Development NSW is transforming the former Roads and Maritime Services building at 1 Simmons Street, Wagga Wagga into a state-of-the-art home for the Riverina Conservatorium of Music (RCM).
Work includes upgrading, refurbishing and repurposing this vacant underutilised government office building to provide teaching, rehearsal and administration space for the Riverina Conservatorium of Music (RCM) providing much needed music education services to the people in the Riverina area.
The new facility will allow for an increased number of children and young professionals to be engaged in high-quality musical education, particularly in isolated and disadvantaged regional communities .
Background
The project commenced following the sale of the premises RCM currently occupies and delivers on a NSW Government commitment made in February 2018 to provide a replacement premises.
The refurbishment design was completed in consultation with RCM and, in 2020, Wagga Wagga City Council approved a change in the design for use as an educational facility.
Early works for the internal strip out of the existing building were completed in preparation for the main refurbishment works.
Following an Expression of Interest process in late 2020, construction tenders for the main works were released to a shortlist of prequalified contractors.
The construction contract was awarded in August 2021 and includes a commitment to utilise trades and suppliers from the Wagga Wagga region.
Next steps
Internal refurbishment works to transform the existing vacant building into a purpose-built tuition and rehearsal space, along with administration and meeting facilities has commenced onsite with completion forecast for the second half of 2022.
