New approach to social housing in Orange

The NSW Government is continuing its work to identify and deliver well-located and high-quality social housing in Orange, paying respect to the views of the local community.

Following community consultation, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) will no longer proceed with proposed redevelopments at Spring and Summer Streets.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey said, “We appreciate the community's feedback, we have listened and we remain committed to delivering additional social housing stock across the Orange LGA”

“The NSW Government is building safer and stronger regional communities, and the investment in new social housing not only supports vulnerable people, it also boosts other local families and local businesses through the creation of jobs,” Mrs Pavey said.

LAHC will continue to work closely with Orange City Council to strategically plan for improved social housing outcomes across the Orange LGA, alongside continuing to progress a number of small-scale redevelopment sites.

This will include seeking to align the work of LAHC and the council in a finalised council Housing Strategy.

Currently, 75 per cent of priority wait list demand for social housing in Orange is for studio, one and two-bedroom homes, with a wait time of between two and five years for smaller dwellings.

The lack of overall dwelling availability is also forcing up waiting times for larger homes to around five to 10 years.
