The excavators have rolled on site and demolition work has commenced on the biggest social and affordable housing renewal development in Australia – the Ivanhoe Estate.
The new $2.2 billion estate will include a co-educational school for 1000 students, managed by Sydney Catholic Schools, two childcare centres, a 120-bed residential aged care home, shops and recreational facilities.
Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward was delighted to be on site to see the demolition works with the Member for Ryde Victor Dominello today.
Mr Dominello said Sydney Catholic Schools and Frasers Property Australia are working together to plan the vertical school which will become a significant contributor to breaking the cycle of disadvantage in the area.
“Ivanhoe is not only about housing. It is a community plus an excellent school. It is a community plus beautiful open green space. It is a community plus tailored support,” Mr Dominello said.
“Ivanhoe is the first major Communities Plus site to break ground. This is wonderful news for those who are in need of social and affordable housing,” Ms Goward said.
“This site will be a first-class designed mixed community of social, affordable and private dwellings with social housing tenants given tailored support by Mission Australia to eventually move towards housing independence.”
Communities Plus will deliver up to 23,500 new and replacement social and affordable housing dwellings and up to 40,000 private homes over the next 10 years across NSW. Other major sites include Waterloo, Arncliffe, Telopea, Riverwood, Redfern and Villawood.
