The NSW Government has released plans for a new housing development to boost social housing supply and support vulnerable community members in the Hunter.
The $6 million project at Fieldsend Street, East Maitland, is part of the government’s investment in building more fit-for-purpose social housing throughout regional NSW.
The proposed redevelopment will transform two aged dwellings and a parcel of vacant land into 18 new homes, located near local shops and public transport to conveniently connect local residents with Maitland and Newcastle.
The contracting of local builders and suppliers will also be prioritised during construction, creating an estimated 29 local jobs during construction.
NSW Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey, said this contemporary housing was designed to blend in with the local community and would help revitalise the surrounding area.
“Communities throughout NSW can expect to see more of these types of developments providing multiple benefits,” she said.
The East Maitland project includes nine one-bedroom units and nine two-bedroom units, with onsite parking and landscaping works.
A development application for the project has been lodged with Maitland City Council and, if approved, construction is expected to start in mid-2021, with the first tenants expected to move in mid-2022.
Once construction is complete, the property will be transferred to a community housing provider who will be responsible for providing management services.
