Orange social housing
In late 2020, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) proposed two developments to create additional social housing in Spring and Summer Sts, in East Orange.
On 27 April, LAHC held four community consultation sessions to discuss these potential projects, along with the broader social housing situation in Orange.
At these sessions, we received strong feedback that:
- The proposed redevelopments would not be compatible with the heritage conservation qualities of the surrounding area, and in some cases adjacent heritage items
- This area of East Orange was a successful example of an integrated community (with private and social housing residents living alongside each other) and therefore should remain unchanged
- The existing brick homes at the above sites should continue to be used for social housing.
In May 2021, LAHC accepted this feedback and announced it had decided to no longer proceed with these projects.
There is a need for more high-quality social housing in Orange to meet rising and changing tenant demand.
To address this priority, LAHC will work closely with Orange City Council to strategically plan for good social housing outcomes across the Orange LGA, as it continues to progress appropriate small-scale redevelopment sites.
