How Smart Places work

What are Smart Places?

All Smart Places:

  1. Embed sensors and communications technology in infrastructure and the natural environment
  2. Use the sensors and technology solutions to capture, safely store and make government-acquired data available
  3. Communicate information and insights using the data to drive decisions.

Designing solutions

In NSW, we seek to design smart solutions relevant to a place and its people. This can be a street or neighbourhood, a local government area, or a region in either the city or country. We work with place owners to:

  • Consider the purpose and future ambitions of a place; its people; and challenges and opportunities.
  • Work with local people to identify smart solutions to help the place achieve its ambitions, realising opportunities and overcoming challenges.
  • Test and trial solutions, finding approaches that can be scaled across other places with similar needs.

We use the term ‘Smart Place’ instead of smart city, to recognise this place-based approach to smart planning.
