2022 free tree giveaway

In Spring 2022 we are continuing our partnership with Bunnings Warehouse to giveaway thousands of trees to homes throughout Greater Sydney.

This October, we are giving away 2,000 magnolia trees.

Other tree varieties are expected to be made available later in Spring.

About the program

Since it started in August 2020, the free tree giveaway program has received an overwhelming response from residents living in Greater Sydney, with more than 67,000 trees already planted.

These trees have been supplied through partnerships with Bunnings Warehouse and IndigiGrow Nursery.

The giveaway is a fantastic opportunity to add some greenery to your home and help make your local area an even more beautiful place to live.

By planting a tree in your own backyard, you are helping build a greener and more liveable Greater Sydney, creating cooler suburbs for generations to come.

We are encouraging everyone to plant one.

Every tree planted from this giveaway is registered towards the Greening our City Premier’s Priority, which aims to plant one million trees in Greater Sydney by the end of 2022.

I have already claimed a free tree(s). Can I order another?

If you claimed a tree in 2020 and/or 2021: Yes, we hope your tree(s) are thriving and we are keen to support you again in 2022.

What happens if I miss out on free tree(s)?

If you miss out, you can register your interest on this webpage via a webform. People who register will be notified when the next round of the giveaway reopens.

If you have registered your interest for previous giveaways, please register your interest again to ensure you are contacted for the next round.

We also encourage everyone to plant trees outside of the giveaway.

Your local nurseries, garden centres or tree stockists have a great variety of trees to choose from.

More trees mean more privacy, more shade and cleaner air. You can also register the trees you plant.

Do I need to register my free tree(s)?

No, we will register your free tree(s) on your behalf.

For all other trees you plant outside the giveaway, register them to be counted towards one million new trees across Greater Sydney by the end of 2022.

What if I live outside Greater Sydney, can I get a free tree?

The free tree giveaway is part of the Greening our City NSW Premier’s Priority which aims to plant one million trees in Greater Sydney by 2022. When this program began in 2018, the definition of Greater Sydney extended to the 33 local government areas (LGAs) of Greater Sydney only.

We’re aware that residents outside this area would love to participate in the program and we will keep looking for opportunities in the future to support tree planting across NSW.

Where can I find planting tips and resources to care for my tree(s)?

If you need help caring for your tree(s), or even for selecting new ones to plant, you can:

  • visit our tree care tips page and watch videos with expert Peter Dawe from the Royal Botanic Garden's Youth Community Greening
  • join our Everyone Plant One campaign and find out more about the benefits of trees and get some planting tips.

Thinking of planting more trees?

Join the Everyone Plant One campaign and plant more trees whether it's in your backyard or on your balcony. Because when everyone plants one, it’s better for everyone.
