Construction begins on Mardi Water Treatment Plant

One of the state’s largest water infrastructure projects has hit a major milestone, with construction underway to upgrade the Mardi Water Treatment Plant which will deliver up to 160 million litres of high-quality drinking water each day to over 200,000 Central Coast locals.

The NSW Government is investing $6.85 million through its successful Safe and Secure Water Program along with over $75 million from Central Coast Council to bring the landmark development to fruition and lock in the region’s water future.

Built over 40 years ago, the existing plant hasn’t been extensively upgraded since 1992 and has often struggled to keep up with demand when there are increased levels of organic material, sediment and algae in Mardi Dam.

It is why Council and the state government have joined forces to get on with the job of improving the technology and equipment to boost capacity and allow more water to be treated, and to an even higher standard, regardless of the raw water quality in the dam.

This will ensure long-term reliability for residents and businesses every time they turn the tap on.

Abergeldie Contractors Pty Ltd won a competitive tender process last year to deliver the project with construction expected to be completed in late 2025 – weather permitting.

The NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program is supporting more than $1 billion worth of projects across the state, with over 270 in various stages of delivery.
