Mixed tenure Build-to-Rent progressing in Redfern

The NSW Government is continuing to advance plans to deliver the State’s first Build-to-Rent mixed housing project, to boost social housing outcomes.

A Planning Proposal was lodged with the City of Sydney today on the new project which aims to deliver a mix of integrated social, affordable and private rental housing in Sydney’s inner city suburb of Redfern.

About 400 new homes will be constructed, subject to development approval, set in an ideal location near the historic Redfern Park and community support facilities.

Land and Housing Corporation Chief Executive, Mick Cassel, said the NSW Government has worked closely with the City of Sydney and other important community stakeholders to develop the proposal and ensure it meets existing and future needs.

“The Redfern Development, located at 600-660 Elizabeth Street, will be the first government backed mixed tenure Build-to-Rent residential development in Australia,” Mr Cassel said.

“This model is a new initiative for the NSW Government and allows us to retain ownership of the land and leverage the private and not-for-profit sectors to help deliver new housing and open space for the community.

“The Communities Plus program is part of the NSW Government’s Future Directions for Social Housing, which will provide more social housing in mixed communities, a better experience to tenants, along with support and services.”

The Redfern development will be located close to the new Metro station at Waterloo and the Redfern train station, universities and schools, local employment, shopping outlets, health and community services.

Following the Planning Proposal being lodged, the community will be invited to provide feedback as part of the statutory planning process led by the City.
