Men’s Shed chips in for Parramatta North community

22 April 2024

The revitalisation of Parramatta North continues, with members from the Parramatta District Men’s Shed volunteering to restore a significant historic walkway structure in the precinct.

The improvements are part of an ongoing program to restore and preserve this place, which has exceptional historical and cultural significance.

The Men’s Shed, based in the Parramatta North precinct, has partnered with Property and Development NSW to repair ironbark timber posts that support the structure known as the ‘Covered Way’. These talented craftspeople will also soon begin work creating new, custom timber benches, to be placed along the restored walkway for the community to use.

The revitalisation of Parramatta North, which is an emerging Western Sydney destination, will deliver a diversity of education, research, commercial, cultural, and residential outcomes over the next 30 years. Work programs already completed include the Western Sydney Start-Up Hub, the Parragirls Memorial Garden and The Green, an 8,000 square metre sportsground unveiled in 2023.

Parramatta North is located on the lands of the Burramada people of the Dharug Nation and any work in the precinct is sensitive to their culture, stories and custodianship.

Property and Development NSW Program Director Nicholas Johnston said:

“This is a unique and fantastic collaboration, enabling local community members of the Parramatta District Men’s Shed to get involved in the revitalisation of Parramatta North.

“This place holds many connected stories, and it is appropriate that we recognise and preserve its past while delivering new and enduring uses for the future.”

Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said:

"The Parramatta District Men's Shed have been a part of the Parramatta North precinct for 10 years, making them perfect partners for this restoration project."

"It's lovely to know that the caring hands of our local Men's Shed members are restoring these priceless iron bark posts so they can support our precious heritage for another century."

Parramatta District Men’s Shed Volunteer Secretary Rob Colless said:

“It was great to have our volunteers involved in repairing the poles that hold up the covered walkway that connects this place.

“We have 71 active members at our men’s shed, which is a diverse group that provides a safe space for men to work in an environment where they can openly share their skills, have open conversations, and enjoy a cuppa while building things.”
