New home for Yarkuwa Indigenous knowledge centre in heart of Deniliquin

Media Release | 29 July 2023

The Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre of Southern NSW has secured a new base in Deniliquin to educate the community and protect the culture and practices of the Wamba Wamba and Perrepa Perrepa Countries in the region.

The NSW Government, through Property and Development NSW, is handing over the unused government-owned property at Hay Road, Deniliquin to ensure strong cultural links are not lost to future generations.

The transfer demonstrates another step in Closing the Gap and supporting regional Aboriginal community groups.

The purchase will help the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre continue its strong work within the Deniliquin and wider community. The Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre is set to move to the property immediately and undertake renovations.

NSW Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said:

“This new base for the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre will support its efforts to protect and continue the traditions of the Wamba Wamba and Perrepa Perrepa people who have been in this area for thousands of years.”

“We are delighted to support their work in educating both locals and visitors to Deniliquin on their long and storied connection to Country.”

NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs David Harris said:

“The NSW Government understands the importance of reviving and celebrating the proud Aboriginal heritage of the many communities and nations across our state.”

“The Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre will be rightful custodians of this site, educating the public around the deep-rooted ties their people have had on this land for many years.”

Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre Manager David Crew said:

“We are grateful to the NSW Government for their ongoing engagement during this process.”

“We have exciting projects over the next 12 months to continue preserving our language, culture and environmental work across the community.”

“All of our projects are focused around engaging with youth, and this site will become an important part of preserving our story for future generations.”
