Work is underway on a $4.6 million housing renewal project in Dubbo that will deliver new social homes, an improved streetscape and a boost for the local economy and jobs.

Existing ageing social housing dwellings at 127-131 Jubilee Street are being replaced by a modern two-storey building comprising 14 new homes for seniors in a vibrant community.

The start of construction is another milestone in the NSW Government’s work to revitalise social housing, strengthen communities and support economic recovery from COVID-19.

There is a significant demand for seniors housing in the Dubbo local government area and this modern two-storey residential apartment building, with eight two-bedroom and six one-bedroom homes, will help meet this demand.

The homes will be located in the established residential area of South Dubbo and are purposefully designed to improve the local streetscape and reflect local character.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey, said the project will also support an estimated 23 jobs during construction, with the builder to prioritise spending on local businesses and trades to help bolster the local economy.

“Across the Dubbo LGA, six projects are currently in progress with the combined potential to create around 46 social homes, 80 jobs and more than $15 million in construction activity,” Mrs Pavey said.

“This includes the $2.2 million project at Short Street, to build eight new homes as part of the long-running partnership between TAFE and the NSW Land and Housing Corporation.

“This initiative allows construction students to work alongside professional tradespeople and TAFE supervisors on-site to gain invaluable hands-on experience.”

These housing renewals form part of the NSW Government’s Future Directions for Social Housing.
