Improved social and affordable housing for Newcastle
Working closely with the City of Newcastle, we’re boosting social housing in the former steel city and creating hundreds of local jobs.
As part of an agreement we signed in 2021, the City of Newcastle identified areas of need where projects could be fast-tracked.
It also effectively agreed to forego rates from our Newcastle properties. We’re now using the money saved to reinvest in social housing in the local government area.
This is an historic agreement, and the first time the council has agreed to such a measure.
Projects delivered under the initiative are expected to deliver more than $25 million in construction activity and create around 118 jobs for the region. Local apprentices and tradespeople are engaged on developments and we’re procuring housing construction materials in Newcastle and the Lower Hunter.
