In February 2023, NSW Government signed an agreement with Tamworth Regional Council, Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council, the NSW Aboriginal Land Council and Landcom to explore the possible use of Crown land for the delivery of new housing, including new social housing.

Our vision for social housing in the Tamworth LGA includes delivering homes to better meet tenants’ needs, located near jobs, shops, transport and services.

Next steps

Early investigations are now underway on a range of sites in Tamworth.

Any housing assessment will consider existing Aboriginal interests in respect of land claims and native title.

Using Crown land to ease housing stress

Crown Lands oversees the state’s Crown land assets (some 34 million hectares or around 42% of NSW). Under our newly signed partnership, we will work together to identify priority areas where there is suitable Crown land for residential development.

Together, we’re working to provide homes for key workers, social housing residents, private purchasers and Aboriginal families.
