What's happening
We’ve transformed a 1950s apartment building into a vibrant new multi-storey complex that will be home for up to 120 residents in central Wollongong.
This mixed-tenure building is comprised of 18 social, 9 affordable and 38 private housing units.
Cleverly designed for maximum flexibility, 8 of the social housing units have dual-key access, potentially creating 18 units. A dual-key unit has 2 self-contained dwellings – each with its own bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living space – which are accessed via a shared foyer, with lockable doors. The unit can operate as a single dwelling or be divided into 2 when needed.
For people living with disability, dual-key units can support independent living, as a carer or support worker can live in the adjoining unit. It also means we can boost the number of social housing apartments in the complex from 10 to 18 when needed.
The complex is located close to City Beach and the home ground of the St George Illawarra Dragons and has a landscaped rooftop and communal areas. It also contains 5-star energy efficient equipment and appliances, with all social housing units built to a 7-star National Housing Energy Rating Scheme (NAThers) rating, reducing the need for heating and cooling.
Around 90% of all construction and demolition materials have been reduced or recycled in the production of this project.
A total of 69 car spaces are provided, together with ground floor retail shops.
We partnered with property and construction company Traders in Purple and not-for-profit community housing provider the Housing Trust on the development.
The project generated approximately 110 jobs during its life cycle.
