Floodplain harvesting measurement

The floodplain harvesting measurement rules set consistent requirements for how water taken under a floodplain harvesting access licence must be measured.

Who this affects

Water users who receive a floodplain harvesting access licence must install metering equipment under Clause 238B of Water Management (General) Regulation (2018).

Measuring floodplain harvesting

Floodplain harvesting needs to be accurately measured to ensure that water take is consistent with the individual licensed volumes and legal limits.

To measure floodplain harvesting, licence holders must install telemetered metering equipment, either on storages used for floodplain harvesting, or at the point where water is taken.

These approaches to primary metering equipment are known as:

When to start using primary measuring equipment

Landholders have 12 months from the first time their floodplain harvesting access licence is credited to install primary metering equipment.

If landholders wish to floodplain harvest before this time, they will need to install, as a minimum, a secondary metering device.

Floodplain measurement equipment requirements and installation

To measure floodplain harvesting, licence holders must install metering equipment that transmits data in near real-time on storages used for floodplain harvesting.

You will need to hire a duly qualified person who has the required qualifications, skills or experience to install specific metering equipment.

Connecting water users with suppliers and installers

The Metering and Measurement Virtual Marketplace is a web-based tool that allows water users to search for specific services, installers and/or suppliers of equipment in NSW. Water users can request a specific installer or supplier contact them.

Equipment installers and suppliers can also search the Virtual Marketplace for water users who have registered and shared their details and may be seeking their services.
