About the program
The Telemetry Uplift Program aims to assist eligible water users in the Murray-Darling Basin with compliance to the metering rules, to ensure water taken from inland regional water sources is extracted fairly, equitably and according to the rules.
By opting in to the program, eligible water users will be offered free telemetry devices, including a local intelligence device (LID) and data logger.
The $10.5 million Australian Government funded program will benefit over 2,500 eligible water users.

Who is eligible?
To apply for free telemetry, you must meet the following criteria:
- be a landholder in the Murray-Darling Basin with a groundwater entitlement of 100ML or more, and/or
- have used 100ML or more of groundwater in any 12-month period within the last 3 years, and
- have an existing compatible meter installed but do not yet have telemetry.
Priority will be given to groundwater sites, however, works that take surface water within the Basin may also be considered.

Why should eligible water users opt-in?
Telemetry is now required for both groundwater and surface water works for water users with cumulative entitlements of 100ML or more, unless otherwise exempt.
Telemetry offers significant benefits, even for those not required to install it. By connecting your equipment to the NSW Government’s telemetry system, you can simplify compliance and reduce the need for manual water take recording and reporting.
Additionally, you’ll gain access to your data in real-time via a private online dashboard and receive email notifications if your telemetry system stops transmitting, keeping you informed and on top of your water management.
Accurate, consistent and timely metering data is important for effective water resource management. It improves water planning, sharing and policy decisions and enables fair enforcement for the benefit of the community and the environment.

Step 1
Complete the registration form to confirm your eligibility

Step 2
A contractor engaged by the department will manage the installation process and arrange access to your property.

The contractor will schedule a visit to install a telemetry device on your meter.

Step 4
After installation, the contractor will test the device to ensure it is working properly and register it with the NSW Government’s system to start transmitting data automatically.

Step 5
Installation fees and a 12-month warranty are included as part of the initiative. Your contractor will support you for the first year to fix any issues that arise.

Step 6
After the warranty period ends, you will be responsible for maintaining the device to continue meeting metering requirements.
Who is doing the work?
The NSW Government is currently inviting equipment suppliers and telemetry installers to participate in a tender process.
We will collaborate with the successful tenderer/s to deliver the program.
We expect contracts to be awarded and installations to begin in the first half of 2025.
