To finalise the South Coast Regional Water Strategy the department sought input on the strategy through two public consultation periods.

The South Coast Regional Water Strategy was adopted on November 2022.

Public consultation 1

The first draft South Coast Regional Water Strategy, which considers maintaining and diversifying water supplies, protecting and enhancing natural systems, supporting water use and delivery efficiency and conservation, and strengthening community preparedness for climate extremes was on public exhibition from 30 October – 13 December 2020.

A comprehensive engagement and consultation program accompanied the release of the draft strategy. This included:

  • face-to-face meetings
  • online webinars
  • formal submissions.

What we heard

Over 34 stakeholders participated in the engagement program and 12 formal submissions were received. Key themes that emerged during this consultation include water security, Aboriginal knowledge and connection to Country, environmental and ecosystem health, and climate change and data modelling, and finalising and implementing the strategy.

Public consultation 2

After incorporating the feedback from the community and doing further analysis, a second draft South Coast Regional Water Strategy was on a second public exhibition from Wednesday, 4 May until Wednesday 1 June 2022.

What we heard

In the second round of the public exhibition of the draft South Coast Regional Water Strategy, 54 stakeholders participated, and we received 6 formal submissions.  Stakeholders raised broadly consistent themes across public consultation phases 1 and 2, with the exception of more feedback in phase 2 about how the strategy would be finalised and implemented.
